Bible Truth Restored

If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.           1 Peter 4:11

Evidence has been accumulating for some years of birds, fish and insects that are known to use internal compasses to navigate by the earth’s magnetic field. Now the first mammal to have this ability has been discovered. The blind mole rat is a native of the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea region. It has rudimentary eyes beneath the skin that do not respond directly to light but are involved in the animal’s ability to sense day and night. Mole rats spend most of their time burrowing in subterranean tunnels, and often have to make long journeys through mazes of tunnels to find food.

Now researchers at Tel Aviv University, together with colleagues in Switzerland, have shown that, in addition to signals such as smell and balance, they monitor their direction on long underground journeys by continuous reference to the earth’s magnetic field. This was discovered by tracking the progress of mole rats in laboratory mazes; when magnets were used to alter the external magnetic field, the animals’ ability to navigate was impaired.

Scientists do not know how such creatures, equipped with very small brains, are able to utilise this ‘sixth sense’. There is some evidence of specialised cells containing magnetite (iron oxide) crystals in the olfactory region of the animal’s brains, but they must also be ‘programmed’ to interpret and respond to the information coming from these structures. Again, natural selection seems quite inadequate to explain such abilities. The wonders and complexities of nature are never-ending, and speak in the clearest tones of the art of God, the Creator.
