Bible Truth Restored

If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.           1 Peter 4:11

As the muscles and organs of our bodies become stronger by use, so spiritual strength can be developed by applying the Word of God to everyday life. When Paul was accused by Felix, he replied, “Herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God and toward men.” He exhorted Timothy, “Exercise yourself unto godliness: for bodily exercise profits little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” The value of good, nourishing food needs no emphasis. Pure spiritual food is a necessity for spiritual health. The best spiritual food is that which comes, like manna, from above: “for the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”

The elders of the early Christian churches were urged to “feed the flock of God,” and Peter said this could be done best by being examples to the flock. This is important, for a good example is better than an exhortation. The Master’s commandments are a thousand times more emphatic because he obeyed them. Our appetites may lead us to indulge in things that are detrimental to health, for there are many tasty delicacies in our spiritual life which may later cause distress. “Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness,” for the kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness. Eating and drinking are essential for our mortal days, but the Master points to a better day by saying: “Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom.”

Pure air and sunshine are the best germ killers, and if we keep out of the smoky, polluted atmosphere of worldly associations, our spiritual health is safer. “If they speak not according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them,” but “men love darkness because their deeds are evil.”

We have seen the importance of spiritual health, we see the importance of preventing spiritual disease by applying the laws of health. These thoughts concern our spiritual life, yet they are practical ideas for every-day living, for if our spiritual life is healthy, natural man will benefit.

Despite the essential severity of some of the Master’s rebukes, they were still given with a completely sympathetic approach consistent with his knowledge of the weakness of the vessels he was dealing with. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you...
