Bible Truth Restored

If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.           1 Peter 4:11

This new year:

When Israel left Egypt, the Lord declared that their calendar was to be changed, and the month of their departure became the “beginning of months” (Exodus 12:2). Instead of being the seventh month (according to the civil year) it was to become the first (as a religious dating)! This was a very radical re-synchronisation of the calendar of Israel, interrupting the normal cycle of events because it was to become a distinctive remembrance of deliverance from the oppression of Egypt and the opportunity of a new life of freedom and service to God. The month was called “Abib,” a word which comes from a root meaning “to be tender” and is often translated as “green ears of corn” thus relating to the new growth that springs forth, forms and then maturing later.
  In a similar way, the new year for ourselves promises that same distinctive break from the past and the opportunity for “new growth.” Although our calendar is a man-made dating system and in reality the only change to a new year is a few numerics, nevertheless it does offer the advantage of reflection and renewed dedication. Often we find ourselves in a fixed and constant cycle of behaviour that is very difficult to break, and the occasion of a new year, provides opportunity to forget the mistakes of the past (Phil. 3:13) and make some radical changes to our thinking patterns and behaviour, as the Lord encouraged Israel to perform.
May we step forward in confidence and renewed vigour, to make a “new beginning” in our service to God, as one poet has expressed it:
Another year is dawning O Father, let it be,
In working or in waiting another year with Thee.
Another year of progress another year of praise;
Another year of proving Thy presence in all our days.
Another year of mercies of faithfulness and grace;
Another year of gladness the glory of Thy face.
Another year of leaning upon Thy loving breast,
Another year of trusting of quiet happy rest.
Another year of service, of witness for Thy love;
Another year of training for holier work above.
Another year is dawning dear Father, let it be,
On earth, or in the kingdom, another year for Thee.
