Israel and Judah failed to live by their vision because of self-interest, forgetfulness of God in time of prosperity, and neglect of one another, and we must not run away with the idea that the same thing could not happen to us. Could we, at this moment, truly face this threefold test of our life with complete assurance? Or is there a niggling doubt at the back of our minds that we are not absolutely free of the same weaknesses?

Jeremiah was inspired to recognize not only the sins which brought Judah to its doom, but also the cure that would bring new life to the remnant: destruction, in order to rebuild; moral cleansing, in order to experience joy; and joy, which could develop a serenity which leads to the right kind of prosperity - treasure in heaven.

For these things we should pray, and pray hard, so that whether we be rich, or whether we be poor in this world’s goods, we might attain to a righteous sense of values. And whenever we pray we should remember that for a timeless moment we are near the gateway of eternity. But we can pass beyond it into the eternal light of life immortal only if we live out our lives in the spirit, as well as in the Truth.
